Working with you to meet sustainability goals

Jeff Alexander | May 18, 2017

Many architects, builders, engineers, and contractors are seeking ways to lower energy bills and create more sustainable projects. Valspar scientists are at the forefront of innovation, creating products that help save energy, earn points in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification program, and meet ENERGY STAR criteria for cool roofs.

According to the U.S. Green Building Council, buildings consume 73 percent of U.S. electricity and are responsible for 38 percent of CO2 emissions. Valspar coatings can help optimize energy performance and mitigate the heat island effect of a roof with our solar reflective coatings.

As the hot rays of the sun scorch the surface of a building, infrared light is converted into heat. This not only increases interior temperatures but it boosts surrounding outside temperatures.  This phenomenon, compounded by smog and asphalt, is responsible for urban areas being significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas. Unfortunately, the heat island effect can radically increase air conditioning use and therefore overall electricity expenses throughout a city.

Innovative cool coatings reflect the sun’s rays away from a building. This may sound simple, but the advanced coating formula dramatically combats one of the largest urban energy problems we face.

Valspar solar reflective coatings are available in several formulations, including 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), silicone modified polyester (SMP) and polyester resin systems. These durable coatings are available in a variety of colors and textures.

As building professional seek solutions to energy and sustainability challenges, Valspar is developing solutions. We understand that coatings are both and art and a science.
