At Valspar, we understand that both color and performance matters. Thanks to decades of extensive weather testing, we know how our coatings respond to the elements.

Our color specialists can advise clients on how different coatings will perform over time and meet performance requirements. Valspar coatings help protect facades from humidity, UV rays, acid rain, and corrosive salt. In certain circumstances, we cannot provide the same warranties for some colors as we can for others. This is due to the limitations of specific pigments against fading and chalking.

“If a client wants superior performance from their coating, we can tell them how to achieve this,” explains Nancy Peden, Senior Project Chemist for Valspar. “Oranges or neon colors will often not last as long as other colors because of the pigments in them. If we can’t achieve the desired performance for a given color, we might be able to provide the coating with a limited warranty, if color selection is more important than performance.”

Warranties are typically impacted by the ratio of organic and inorganic pigments required to achieve a desired color. Bright colors are typically created with organic pigments and can fade faster. Ceramic and some inorganic pigments provide greater durability and have the best fade, ultraviolet and weather-resistance.

Valspar color experts have the expertise and product portfolio to develop coating solutions that meet your project specifications. Valspar color scientists carefully consider environment, type of coating, primer, coating thickness, and color when developing a color that meets customer performance requirements.
